by Niki Kefala

Greek teenagers remember that Rodos was the dream of every five-day trip at the end of the school. But also the oldest don't forget the cosmopolitan character and the great holidays that Rodos island can offer. The truth is that the island of Knights doesn't leave anyone unsatisfied! Rodos is the largest island in the Dodecanese and is located on the south-eastern tip of Greece. It has an area of 1.398 square km, 220 km coastline and its population is 115,290 inhabitants (census 2011). The island was named after the Rodo flower.

By entering the port, visit Mandraki for a walk to the impressive Italian buildings. Stop at Rodini Park with the beautiful view of the bay of Ixia and live the past in the ancient acropolis. At the center of Rodos town feel like the knights by strolling through the medieval town. Continue your tour with a stop in Ialyssos with the lovely bay. You will enjoy the lush vegetation at the villages Maritsa and Mandrikio. You will be impressed by Lindos and also by the Valley of the butterflies. At Afandou you will swim in the endless beach. Worthwhile a stop is the picturesque village of Archaggelos. At Kalithea or Faliraki you will enjoy the crystal clean waters and the endless fun (yes, it's until the morning!).

Traditional products of the island are cereals, fruits, olives, olive oil, wine and tobacco. The exceptional wines of Rodos are produced with the main factors the brilliant sun and the soft climate of the island and gained recently the Name of Origin of Superior Quality.

In Rodos, there are two markets, one within a wall in Old Town and one in the New Town. At Jewish Martyrs Square and at Liberty Square you will find painters who make portraits of bystanders. In the new city, the activity along the market stops early, but Rodos is famous for its nightlife.

Most clubs are located in the new city, from the hotel of the Roses to Ialisos, while the so-called 'ethnic bars' make the difference because only visitors of the same nationality hang out there. Regarding accommodation there are plenty of choices, from simple rooms with a good level of service to luxury 5 star hotels with full equipment.
